Using a business name for your company
When the company is registered it needs to use the business name in the same form which is entered in the business registry of Slovenia. You can also use the shorter version of the business name. The shorter version has to include the unique name which is distinctive from other companies and the abbreviation of the company type.
The business name includes the following elements: fantasy name by which it differs from other companies, and the label which describes the business activity and the label of the company type, like limited liability company (d.o.o.)
Additional components that identify a company in more detail must not be such as to mislead or be likely to mislead as to the nature or extent of the business or to be confused with another person’s business or distinguishing mark or to infringe the rights of others. In addition to the letters of the Slovenian alphabet, additional components of the company may also contain the letters X, Y, W and Q. The component of the company that indicates the activity and company type abbreviation must be in Slovenian language.

Business name – limitations and restrictions
The Companies Act stipulates that a business name may not contain:
- names or symbols of foreign countries or international organizations,
- words Slovenia in all declensions and adjectives. In case you want to use the word Slovenia, the Slovenian government needs to approve it in advance.
- name and surname or pseudonym of a historical or other famous person, unless you obtain prior permission,
- words or signs that are contrary to law or morality, contain trademarks or unregistered signs that enjoy protection under the regulations governing trademarks or contain or imitate official signs.
The Slovenian government can allow using the word Slovenia in the business name if:
- the company has no outstanding tax obligations,
- the company is not in process of insolvency
- and if the company performs a gainful activity that is of greater importance for the Republic of Slovenia.
