The country is located in central Europe, bordering on Croatia, Italy, Hungary and Austria. It joined the European Union in 2004 and the Schengen zone in 2007. The country gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 and has the highest development rate of the former states. Its governmental system is a parliamentary democratic republic.

Slovenia has approximately 2 million inhabitants, with ethnic Slovenes making up roughly 83% of the population.
