Toll collection and vignettes in Slovenia – changes in 2021

Vignettes are a toll collection system on motorways in Slovenia. The billing system pf toll collection varies from country to country. Doing business in Slovenia often includes transportation. This can be in the form of import or export business, or passenger transportation, and sometimes even international transportation of goods. Currently, Slovenia uses a system of paper vignettes, which users mount on the windshield of their vehicle. For the next year, toll collection in Slovenia will change and e-vignettes will come into use.

Toll collection and vignette system

Previously, tolls were charged on a mileage basis. In 2008, Slovenia introduced vignettes for passenger cars instead. From 2018, trucks and buses with a maximum permissible weight of over 3.5 tons have their own electronic toll collection system DarsGo.

Electronic vignettes for passenger cars

Toll collection for passenger cars from December 1st 2021 will be in the form of electronic vignettes. The amendment to the Toll Collection Act prescribes the introduction of electronic vignettes for personal vehicles.

Electronic vignettes – a fairer billing system for toll collection?

Toll collection in the form of electronic vignettes should bring a fairer system. The purchase of a vignette will now also be possible via an application, online or at the gas station. Toll on highways will still be paid through the purchase of annual, semi-annual and weekly vignettes for 3 different vehicle categories. The cameras will record the license plates of your vehicle, and Dars (Slovenian Motorway Company) will then check who paid for the vignette and who did not.

Also, toll collection based on electronic vignette brings 2 more advantages:

• e-vignettes will be valid for one year from the date of purchase
• if the vehicle is withdrawn from traffic, a refund will be possible.

What are the prices of the last paper toll vignettes on the highway?

This year, you will stick the last toll vignettes on highways on your cars’ windshields. Dars reports that the color of this year’s vignettes will be blue. Also, prices remain unchanged from December 1, 2019.

An annual vignette for  motorcycles costs € 55.00, a semi-annual vignette € 30.00 and a weekly € 7.5.

Annual vignettes for personal vehicles will cost € 110.00, semi-annual € 30.00 and weekly € 15.00.

If you are a van driver you will pay € 220.00 for an annual vignette, for a semi-annual € 60.00 and for a weekly vignette € 30.00.
