Who can become a sole trader in Slovenia?

In Slovenia, a natural person can become a sole trader in case they are EU citizen or have been living in Slovenia at least 1 year. In this case, it can be any nationality. A sole trader means that you are providing a service as a natural person. Hence, you hold all liability for business conduct with your personal assets.

What documents to you need to become a sole trader in Slovenia?

In order to register as a sole trader, you need Slovenian tax number and EMŠO number. An EMŠO is a personal identification number. Additionally, your company would need a business address in Slovenia. As a sole trader, you do not need to provide share capital for the registration. You can register any business activity withing the sole trader entity. Once you register as sole trader, you become self-employed and have to pay social contributions.

Are you registering as a sole trader in Slovenia for the first time?

If a person is registering as a sole trader for the first time, there is a 50% relief in paying certain social contributions for the first year. The contributions that it applies to are for pension and disability insurance. In the second year, the tax relief for the same contributions is 30%.

In September 2020, the contributions for pension and disability insurance added up to 256,24€ per month. So, with the tax relief, you would only have to pay 128,12€ per month for pension and disability contributions. The contributions for medical insurance added up 141,54€ per month in September 2020. Also, the contributions for parental care added up to 2,10€/month, while the employment contributions added up to 2,10€/month.

This means, that the full social contributions for sole traded are 401,98€ per month, while the 50% tax relief means that you only have to pay 273,86€/month for the first year. This is only applicable for those who are opening the sole trader business for the first time.
