Process of obtaining a residence permit in Slovenia for foreign nationals

Reasons for applying for a residence permit in Slovenia for foreign nationals can be various. Foreigners who wish to stay in the Republic of Slovenia for the longer period, which means, those who have a plan to live in Slovenia, have the opportunity to do so on the basis of a visa.

Process of obtaining residence permit in Slovenia for foreign nationals

The process in most cases begins at the Embassy of Slovenia in the country of your residence. The temporary residence permit can be obtained on the basis of work, study, family relations or other reasons (for example on the basis of marriage with a citizen of Slovenia). For a residence permit for foreign nationals you can apply on the basis of family ties in Slovenia (for example, you have a Slovenian spouse, parent, grandparent), you can begin the process of applying for a residence permit in Slovenia at the Administrative unit. If you are applying on the basis of some other reason, such as work or study, you will need to start the process before entering Slovenia, on the Slovenian Embassy in your country of residence.

After the residence application is submitted, your documents will be sent to an Administrative Unit in Slovenia. Administrative unit is going to check and evaluate whether your qualifications are suitable for gaining a residence permit. When or if you fulfilled all the criteria for the residence permit, Administrative unit will notify Slovenian Embassy, which will further contact you.

Keep in mind that here are no requirements to speak Slovene or to demonstrate knowledge of the history and/or culture in order to obtain a temporary residence permit. Temporary permits are usually valid for one year and must be renewed prior to expiration date at the local Administrative Unit. After five years of living in Slovenia on a basis of temporary residence permit, you have the right to apply for permanent residency.
