European Union – new legislation in the field of freight transport
The new regulations aim to increase the effectiveness of legislation in three key areas:
- deployment of drivers in international traffic,
- cabotage and
- driver’s rest period.
The driver, for example, will not be allowed to rest in the vehicle for more than 45 hours a week, but in appropriate accommodation paid for by the employer. The employer has to organize the work in a manner that allows the drivers spend more time at home. In order to detect violations, they will install smart tachographs, which will record border crossings and other activities.
The European Union also adopted new rules on so-called deployed workers. Also, the revised regulations will require road haulers to carry out a significant volume of their business in the Member State in which they have a registered transport company.
The regulations will also introduce an obligation for the driver to return to the company’s operating headquarters every eight weeks. The rules will extend to carriers using light commercial vehicles weighing more than 2.5 tons. In addition, the vans will have to be equipped with tachographs.
