Minimum wage 2021 in Slovenia: freezing the amount was unsuccessful
The amount of minimal salary has been the subject of negotiations between employers, unions and the Ministry of Labor, family and social affairs for several months. At the end of last year, the European Union presented a directive to the Member States. It provides a framework for the ways in which the 2021 minimum wage is set in the Member States.
The directive has sparked a debate in Slovenia in the light of epidemic-related measures. The dilemma was the following:
- whether the 2021 minimum wage should be frozen and remain at 2020 levels, or
- the amendment to the minimum wage law should be taken into account. Since January 2021, the amount of the minimum cost of living is also important for determining the amount.
Minimum wage 2021 in Slovenia: how much is it?
Despite efforts to reach an deal to freeze wages, decision-makers finally agreed to raise the minimum wage in 2021. The minimum wage in 2021 is now expected to amount to 1,025 EUR gross (736 EUR net). It means an increase in the minimum wage by 84, 42 EUR gross compared to 2020.
The new calculation formula stipulates that the 2021 minimum wage will have to exceed the calculated minimum cost of living by at least 20 but not more than 40%. The minimum cost of living since 2017 was 613 EUR for a single person. This is when the last calculation of the minimum cost of living basket was prepared. The Social Welfare Benefits Act envisages updating the amount in 2023.
Minimum wage throughout the history of Slovenia
In the 25-year history of Slovenia, there were two significant increases in the minimum wage:
- The first significant increase occurred in 2010 (from 593 EUR gross to 734 EUR gross).
- The second significant increase occurred in 2018 (from 887 EUR gross to 940.8 EUR gross).
